CoQ10 (CoEnzyme Q10)

CoQ10 (CoEnzyme Q10) or Ubiquinone is fat-soluble antioxidant that exists naturally in our mitochondria and as the body's 'spark plug' is responsible for releasing energy from food. CoQ10 is essential in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the basic energy molecule of each cell.

Body levels of CoQ10 diminish with ageing, stress, illness, drugs and over activity.

CoQ10 Food Sources: Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish, organ meats such as liver, and whole grains

CoQ10 & Heart Health: CoQ10 is mainly transported by lipoproteins such as LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein). CoQ10 is one of the first antioxidants to be depleted when LDL is subjected to oxidation. Hence, CoQ10 is an important nutrient that prevents the oxidation of lipoproteins, thus potentially reducing the risk of arteries from forming plaques and getting damaged.

Studies have found that levels of Coenzyme Q10 are low in people with heart disease because CoQ10 is heavily concentrated in the mitochondria cells in the heart.

Several trials have reported that supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) leads to a significant decrease in blood pressure in people with hypertension. Much of this research has used 100 mg of CoQ10 per day for at least 10 weeks, and indicates that it may have a significant role in the normal regulation of blood pressure.

CoQ10 & Mens Fertility Health: In studies involving infertile men, Co-Q10 has been associated with an increase in sperm count, improved sperm motility and improved rates of fertilization.

CoQ10 & Gum/Periodontal Health: Gum disease is associated with swelling, bleeding, pain, and redness of the gums. Studies have shown that people with gum disease tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their gums.

In a few studies involving small numbers of subjects, CoQ10 supplements caused faster healing and tissue repair.

CoQ10 & Skin Health: As a fat soluble antioxidant, CoQ10 scavenges the free radicals which attack the body's cells thereby preventing cellular damage. As such, it helps to diminish collagen destruction from any inflammatory process.

Low levels of CoQ10 tends to result in a lessened ability to produce collagen, elastin and other important skin molecules. CoQ10 depleted skin may also be more susceptible to free radical damage.
