Policosanol
Policosanol is a blend of fatty alcohols derived from natural plant waxes. Policosanol contains several long chain fatty alcohols (LCFA’s), including Triacontanol, Octacosanol and Hexacosanol. These fatty alcohol constituents:
have antioxidant activity
inhibit lipid peroxidation
are anti-coagulant
Cholesterol & Policosanol: Cholesterol is transported through the bloodstream by lipoprotein ('fat) molecules. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) carries fats from the liver to the body cells, while High-density lipoprotein (HDL) carries fat back to the liver. The higher the level of LDL, the more fat is in circulation, and the greater the risk of atherosclerosis ('hardening of the arteries').
Most of the research on Policosanol has centered on its possible role in the reduction of blood cholesterol levels. In every one of 14 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies that have been conducted on patients with high cholesterol levels, policosanol - predominantly in the dosage range of 5-20 mg/day - produced consistently positive results i.e raises HDL levels and dramatically decreases levels of LDL ("bad cholesterol") and total cholesterol
According to one study, policosanol may rival the effectiveness of certain pharmaceutical cholesterol-lowering medications including lovastatin and simvastatin
also promotes cardiovascular health in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes
Circulation & Policosanol: Other studies suggest that policosanol may help the body maintain proper blood flow through the circulatory system. This possible benefit is related to policosanol's affect on platelet aggregation, reducing the ability of the platelets to clump together, thicken the blood and if necessary forming a clot. Daily aspirin intake accomplishes this very effect and a recent study has indicated a possible advantage for combined policosanol and aspirin therapy. Recommended for
atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
intermittent claudication - according to a study in Angiology (2003;54:25–38) Policosanol is more effective than lovastatin (Mevacor®) in treating intermittent claudication (IC),
prevention of 'travellers thrombosis'
Note: Vcaps are suitable for vegetarians
Caution: If you have a bleeding disorder talk to your doctor before taking this dietary supplement
