L-Arginine
L-Arginine is an amino acid, essential to the metabolism of
ammonia that is generated from protein breakdown. It is also needed
to transport the nitrogen used in muscle metabolism.
Body-building: Arginine is one of the body-building amino
acids and also influences several hormone functions. L-arginine has
been shown to stimulate the pituitary gland to produce and secrete
human growth hormone in young males, at a dose of more than 3 grams
daily. Human growth hormone helps in muscle building, leading to
increased muscle strength and tone, and enhances fat metabolism
(increases the burning of fats), which may help with weight loss.
High Blood Pressure L-arginine allows blood vessels to
dilate, thus leading to reduced blood pressure. In one controlled
trial, people not responding to conventional medication for their
hypertension were found to respond to a combination of conventional
medication and oral arginine (2 grams taken three times per day.)
Immunity: L-arginine has a positive effect on the immune
system, mainly by stimulating thymus activity. L-Arginine also helps
the body heal from wounds, possibly as an aid to collagen formation.
Sexual Function:L-Arginine is a precursor to Nitric Oxide
(NO) which promotes circulation, resulting in improved blood flow to
the penis. In addition to improved erectile function, studies with
L-Arginine report an increase in sexual satisfaction in men and
improved sexual desire and satisfaction in women L-arginine
supplementation, at a dosage of 4 grams daily, has been successful
in improving fertility in men by increasing low sperm count and
motility.
Caution: During outbreaks of cold sores and genital
herpes, arginine foods and supplements must be avoided. Instead
supplement with L-Lysine
